THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL MARKETS FOR BREADFRUIT

This
pertains to the information that members of the CENTRAL VISAYAS AGRICULTURE AND AQUATIC NATURAL RESOURCES RESEARCH
AND DEVELOPMENT CONSORTIUM CVAARRDEC are
encouraged to submit a proposal not later than end of December 2017.
This
proposal is a spin-off of the Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology
and the S and T support to
Community-based Drought resistant Natural farming system.
As
a strategy to deepen the community research and development of breadfruit, we
propose the project to increase its financial viability through the following:
PROJECT TITLE:
RESEARCH ON HOW SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CAN INCREASE THE NUMBER BREAD
FRUIT PLANTING MATERIALS AND INCREASE THE NUMBER OF HARVESTED FRUITS IN A
BREADFRUIT TREE IN ONE FRUITING SEASON.
PROJECT BACKGROUND
The
interest on the development of breadfruit as a staple food and development of
many breadfruit products is supported by the interest to develop potential
products for local and foreign markets as expressed by the Regional Director of
DOST 7 Edilberto L. Paradela and the Secretary of the Department of Science and
Technology Fortunato de la PeƱa.
It
may be recalled that the discussion on the need to develop kolo or breadfruit
started with the drought experienced on
2015 and 2016 where the resiliency of the kolo tree came into fore. It came as
information that the breadfruit became a staple food as an alternative to rice
and corn during drought conditions in many parts of the country. The breadfruit
also known as kolo, dimas, rimas in different regions was the source of food
for animals and the people in the areas where drought struck.
The
long drought in 2015 and 2016 has
withered the leaves of the mango trees and other foliage, but kolo continued to
bear fruit for the animals such as carabao, cattle, goat and poultry and food
for the people in the community.
The
volunteers of ASKEDWELL Center, Mr. Emilio P, Biore, retired principal and Mr. Ricardo S. Urot, retired
agriculturist awardee, together with Dr. Silvano B. Maranga, President / CEO
discussed experiences on the propagation of kolo. The planting practices as
experienced by each officer, came into life an experience in the past as a
rediscovery of the idea of the late Mr. Renato “Atoy” Abella, who was the
Assistant Provincial Agriculturist of the Province of Cebu.
The
concept was tested and a nursery for breadfruit was set-up at the backyard of
Mr. Ricardo S. Urot and Mr. Emilio P. Biore. This nursery was visited by
Secretary Fortunato de la PeƱa and launched on
September 1, 2017 together with officials of DOST 7 led by Director Edilberto
L. Paradela.
As
of today, there are 70 seedlings and remarcotted to double the seedlings every
two months. One plan is to plant kolo in areas along the roads in Barangay
Bongdo, Borbon, Cebu and the other suggested plan is to create a kolo
plantation in a one hectare land. This can make the community rich in kolo as
there will be a thousand kolo trees in
the area.
There
are now 87 fruit bearing kolo trees in Barangay Bongdo. Per experience with the
CEST project, the harvesting of kolo fruit is a difficult activity as the trees
are tall and fruits are difficult to reach even with the use of long poles. A
bump on the fruit can cause it to be damaged within 12 hours.
The
concept of increasing the number of kolo seedlings and increasing the
harvesting potential of the kolo fruit is recognized by the Barangay Council of
Bongdo through a Barangay Resolution. While the idea is acceptable there are
important details which may derail the application of the science and
technology to the kolo propagation.
It
is important that the ASKEDWELL CENTER, located in Barangay Bongdo perform its community-based research while
the Research Station of Department of
Agriculture conducts the research based on the technology transfer conducted by
ASKEDWELL CENTER through the assistance of DOST 7 and officers of Department of
Agriculture 7.
In
hindsight, this could be a project for the CVAARRDEC where a community-based
institution conducts its research and development activity and the DA conducts
a station-based research in Siquijor, Bohol, Negros Oriental and Cebu Province.

5. As per plan, an initial of 5 breadfruit
tress will be pruned using the techniques of the AYURVEDA an ancient
knowledge of cutting and growing
trees. In this case, pruning starts on the eastern branches followed by the
western branches, then the north and followed by the south branches. Pruning
will be done according to the height of 10 feet and as the new branches
grows, each branch will be bent or controlled similar to the development of
bonsai. This will be coordinated by a volunteer supervisor on research Mr.
Warlito lim, a monk of the Hare Krshna religion.
The
pruning shall be done with specific techniques to prevent shock and onslaught of disease to the trees and
thereby prevent untimely death to the tree

6.
In about 6 months or less from pruning, when fresh growth of saplings or
branches develop to a half-inch diameter, the marcotting takes place. The
technique as presented during the Seminar on Breadfruit Propagation through
Application of Science and Technology to Natural Farming and Organic
Agriculture Systems conducted by ASKEDWELL CENTER, DOST AND DA on July 17-21,
2017 shall be utilized

7. The expected result is a breadfruit tree 10
feet high and branches –leaves spread in a 15 ft radius around the trunk.
Fruits will be easy to harvest and the leaves of the tree and branches in a
compact form. When these trees are planted in a one-hectare lot in a
community, harvesting of the fruits will provide better financial viability
than harvesting the kolo fruit in a higher elevation

As
per plan the following activities are to be performed to complete the community
– based research and technology transfer as an effort to develop an organic
culture of inclusive development in a community.
As
in any idea or concept, it shall be measured against actual results through
experimentation and test. This shall be done with the participation of the
community and the members of the CVAARRDEC. This shall be process to test the
interaction between and among the Community, ASKEDWELL CENTER, GA in this case
the Department of Agriculture and Department of Science and Technology.
Expected result of the Science and Technology Research will be transferred to
accepting communities with the end-view of inclusive growth and development.

We are presently
engaged with DOST 7 in a project entitled COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT THROUGH SCIENCE
AND TECHNOLOGY. This is a spin –off of the project conducted during the long
drought entitled GIA-DOST 7 PROJECT
S&T SUPPORT TO COMMUNITY-BASED DROUGHT RESISTANT NATURAL FARMING SYSTEM In brief, this project covers marcoting
( a recently rediscovered technology by the volunteers of ASKEDWELL CENTER) planting
and processing of bread fruit, setting up above-ground-fish- pond using
ferro-cement technology for raising tilapia and catfish, raising animals for
fertilizer production, and urban vertical gardening. This supports the
inclusive growth program of the government.
