 KOLO OR BREADFRUIT FESTIVAL

BACKGROUND

The KOLO OR BREADFRUIT Festival was conceived with the intention implement the agri-fishery based  rural development program for Barangay Bongdo by the leaders of Baran­­­gay Bongdo, Borbon, Cebu, endorsed by the Municipality of Borbon  and provided with financial assistance from the DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY REGION 7 AND ASKEDWELL CENTER. The 1st KOLO OR BREADFRUIT FESTIVAL will be held on September 7, 2017  and the 2nd KOLO OR BREADFRUIT FESTIVAL HELD ON OCTOBER 14, 2017. For more participation of this Festival, this will be held in conjunction with the tilapia festival or other celebrations in the Barangay.

The leaders of the community supported the program for its long term effect on food security and preparedness for calamities due to climate change.
The PURPOSEs of the program are:
1.       ENCOURAGE THE BARANGAY HOUSEHOLDS TO COOK, PROCESS AND PRESERVE  KOLO OR BREADFRUIT IN THEIR HOMES AND ORGANIZATIONS AS THIS IS A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE IN DEVELOPING A STAPLE FOOD.
2.       BACKYARD NURSERY FOR KOLO IN THE CONCEPT OF FOOD ALWAYS IN THE HOME OF CWL AND THE APPLICATION OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY TO NATURAL FARMING AND ORGANIC AGRICULTURE SYSTEMS OF DOST AND ASKEDWELL CENTER IS ENCOURAGED
3.       ADVOCATE THE USE OF KOLO OR BREADFRUIT AS PROTEIN FOR PLANTS AND ANIMALS AND FOOD IN THE TABLE
4.       ADVOCATE THE USE OF KOLO OR BREADFRUIT AS PROTEIN ENHANCER TO VEGETABLES

These purposes are translated into action and activities that correspond to its goals. As this KOLO OR BREADFRUIT festival is conducted on this date September 8, 2017 in conjunction but done separately with the cultural –religious celebration of Barangay Bongdo, it has added an educational and fun component to the celebration. This is also augmented with the incoming kolo festival or breadfruit festival which will be held on October 7, 2017.

This KOLO OR BREADFRUIT Festival is the third of a series of activities of the barangay as it endeavors to rise from the devastation brought about by Typhoon Yolanda and prepare for disasters in the era of climate change. The organizers believe that in the next few years, the KOLO OR BREADFRUIT Festival as implemented in the Barangay  will become a major milestone in the development of Barangay Bongdo. As of this date August 2, 2017, plans and in the implementation phase are developed in preparation for set-up of ABOVE –GROUND FISH POND UNDER THE PROJECT OF DOST 7 AND ASKEDWELL. There will be at least 25 ponds set-up in the participating households.

These ponds will be used to raise KOLO OR BREADFRUIT and grow water cabbage to develop silage and natural feeds for animals. KOLO OR BREADFRUIT, as a sturdy tree survive in typhoons and continue to bear fruits during drought condition. hence breadfruit project is important in the research for alternative food that is available in the backyard.

The local and community leaders have identified competitions, which can help achieve the goals of the project and provided with prizes and awards to the winners.

TOTAL BUDGET PROPOSED: A MINIMUM OF PHP 15,000.00 with the expectation that there are benefactors who may provide cash or in kind to make this activity a success.
