Norman King, who recently earned his degree in Behavioral Sciences, proudly wore the famous bahag or clothing used by indigenous people in Luzon of the AETA tribe

A TRIBAL WOMAN OF THE ATA TRIBE OF PAQUIBATO, DAVAO CITY

This a documentation of a tribal woman Flora S. Onsad who has a child born recently in Davao City.

The 33 - year old woman is a product of the harsh life of the indigenous peoples in the hinterlands of Davao City.

She was still a child when she lost both parents at approximately 8 years old. She was adopted by an uncle. But due to poverty and culture she was married through the traditional “buya”  or arranged marriage at an age before she had her first menstruation.

The husband, through the marriage rituals of the Ata tribe, with barely a few rice cake carried the wife to his home  which is a few kilometers from the birth place  in Tapak. This barangay is basically agricultural and near a river. This where the ritual took place with a 2 or 3  members of the family were present. A tribal datu, who is also an uncle, conducted the simple rites.

Such were the conditions in the past 30 years. It was a difficult time for women to grow and achieve education and better life. She bore a child then followed by another. Three children in a row were born without medical assistance as Tapak is a community with underveloped road network. All three children died within 1 year or 2 after birth. This could be due to inability to take of the child or due to malnutrition.

She ran away from home leaving her two daughters with reasons including physical harassment and inability to provide food for children. She left her husband and returned to her childhood place in stayed with her uncle, Pablo Diwan, a tribal chieftain and a barangay councilor.

In Tapak, she gave birth to a third child, which she carried in her womb when she ran away from her husband Lito. This child a boy by the name of Gabriel is the third of the three children that she gave birth and living. Gabriel has two elder sisters Rosanna and Judy Ann with ages from 9 to 13 years old.

All three children are all sired by the first husband. The after 5 years of separation from her first husband, she again was married in tribal rite to a person named Marcelo. Who by culture and tradition would want to keep all earnings from the farm and sales from corn and other farm products. These were sold in the city of Panabo, a 3 –hour drive from Tapak, through a motorcycle ride in rough roads. The fare for a single person riding in the motorcycle is Php 1,000.00. covering the cost of ride for 5 persons in a “habal-habal or skylab “

During their 3 or 4 years living in as husband and wife, a house was built with roof from metal roofing. Which was later demolished.

Life for Flora is a generally a life of want and difficulty in search of food and education. And pain due to physical abuse.  She joined the Four-square Gospel church and became a member of the choir, and practiced tribal music.

She looked for better pasture and from Panabo City , she found herself in Cebu City with a work assigned to fetch and bring two  children from house to school.

This task was quite difficult as she is unfamiliar with the place, the culture and over-all way of life. She returned to Davao on March 2017 after 8 months of work in Cebu City.

She was able to save Php 7,000.00 which is deposited at Panabo City Cooperative.

She was enrolled at the TESDA Training Center in Tibungco, Davao City. She learned few skills in baking from the Baking Course. It was then found out that she was pregnant. And upon, questioning, she related the  that a trisicad driver sexually molested her. She was afraid to tell anyone as she had no friends in the area and was already preparing to return home to Davao.

Upon knowing that she was pregnant, her uncle, was dismayed as she was pregnant without a husband and would not help her.

Being alone and without a home, she was taken in by the Maranga Clan for food and temporary shelter and until she give birth.

While at home, she cooked banana and other native food. And making a round in the neighborhood to sell to a small livelihood endeavor. She wants to learn and earn a living.
